When looking at generators to purchase, there are many factors that need to be determined, including whether the unit needs to be sound attenuated, on a trailer, what size transfer switch it requires, whether it needs an additional fuel tank, where will the generator be placed, the amount of usage expected from the generator, and more.
What type of fuel is best?
There are many advantages and disadvantages to different types of fuel. Nearly all generators use petrol, diesel, or LPG. The following notes should answer any questions or concerns regarding different fuel sources.
Petrol - Advantages
Common fuel source - easily obtained
Increases portability of smaller generators
Petrol - Disadvantages
Highly flammable
Short shelf life (approximately 12 months)
Storing large quantities is hazardous
May not be available during power outages
Somewhat expensive
Inefficient
One manufacturer is of the opinion that petrol is not suitable for marine uses, so all their marine generators are driven by diesel engines from world renowned engine manufacturers.
LPG - Advantages
Long shelf life
Clean burning
Easily stored in both large tanks or in smaller 5 - 10 gallon cylinders
Obtainable during power outages - gas stations may be unable to pump fuel during an area wide outage
Home delivery available for larger tanks
LPG - Disadvantages
Pressurized cylinder of flammable gas
Fuel system is more complicated
Larger tanks are not aesthetically pleasing
Fuel system plumbing results in higher installation cost
Somewhat Expensive
Diesel - Advantages
Least flammable fuel source
Easily obtained
On site fuel delivery available
Diesel - Disadvantages
18-24 month shelf life
Installing large storage tanks raises cost of system
May not be available during power outages
Most manufacturers offer a range of generators with ouput being between 750 watts and 2700 watts. There are generators equipped with a state of the art OHV engine delivering maximum power to weight ratio, that have the benefit of 12 volt DC battery charging and come complete with charging leads and tool kit. There are model available that can assure prompt starting in all possible conditions, being fitted with a 4 stroke engine with over head valves (OHV) using the most up to date technology. A 4.5 litre fuel tank gives approx. seven hours running at half load making the unit extremely portable and versatile.
One interesting model is known as the Suitcase Generator and pushes out 1000 watts. One manufacturer offers a single source of energy, with it claims are a million uses which it calls the Portable Power Station, which is designed to resolve the problems which arise when no other power source is available, for instance where climatic conditions make engine starting difficult.
Silence of operation
A quiet generator is of upmost importance when pleasure cruising. Does it conform to the second phase of directive 2000/14/EC in force from 2006 as regards quiet running ?
Battery Charging
Batteries are generally misunderstood and almost universally ignored until they fail. Although there are differences between the systems used on power and sail craft the basics are similar and the principal differences are the length of time between recharge and applications of appropriate equipment.
Wind generators
Electricity produced by wind generators can be used directly, as in water pumping applications, or it can be stored in batteries for for household useage. Wind generators can be used alone, or they may be used as part of a hybrid system, in which their output is combined with other types of generators.
The features of one such generator
Carbon Fibre Composite Blades
Aircraft quality aluminium alloy castings
Exclusive brush-less neodymium cubic curve alternator
Sophisticated internal battery charge regulator
Maintenance-free - only two moving parts
Full kit available for easy boat mounting.
Exclusive auto-brake-feature that slows the AIR to a silent spin when the batteries are charged thus extending bearing life and reducing noise.
Marine powder-coating and stainless steel fittings for corrosion protection in a marine environment
High wind safe mode - Automatically slows turbine in potentially damaging winds. Reduces noise and distractions for peace-of-mind when on or off your boat.
Solar panels
Well manufactured solar panels are specially designed for use on boats, yachts, sea lights and life rafts. Sturdy, robust construction yields a strong yet lightweight, unbreakable solar panel that can be glued or screwed to nearly any surface. Can be walked on - modules are tough, no glass.
Water driven generators
One well known water driven generator features:
1.8 kilowatts per day at 6 knots boat speed
Heavy-duty cast aluminum oil-filled casing with triple seals for durability and dependability
Produces about one amp per knot of water speed
Works at just 1.5 knots, even at anchor in a strong current
When sailing at 9 knots, it produces 8 amps, 100 watt-hours per hour continuously, 2.4 kilowatt-hours per day.
